“Every 4 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every 10 minutes blood cancer takes a life.
Blood cancer is the second leading cause of all cancer deaths in the U.S. Bone marrow transplants provide lifesaving treatments for patients with blood disorders by replacing their unhealthy marrow with healthy blood-forming cells. 70 percent of patients needing a bone marrow transplant rely on the bone marrow registry to find an unrelated downer, the probability of finding a match is still very low. This is why every new downer counts! Each one of us can potentially save a life!”
You Are Someone’s Chance For Life.
“With over 3 million potential donors worldwide, DKMS is the world’s largest bone marrow donor center. still 50 percent of patients never find a match, the donor and patient must have at least 8 out of 10 tissue characteristics (HLA characteristics) in common, but ideally should have 10. With more than 4,000 know characteristics that can occur in millions of combinations, finding a match is extremely rare. Patients with more diverse ethnic backgrounds (including African Americans, Latinos and Asians) tend to have more diverse HLA types, making it even more difficult to find a match. This is why we need YOU to register as a potential bone marrow donor. Having more donors on the registry will enable more of Giovanni’s Friends to be saved! “
If You Are Matched.
“If you match a patient, you will be asked to give a blood sample for further testing and you will have a thorough physical examination. If it is determined that you are a suitable donor, you will be asked to donate in one of two ways. The method used is determined by the patient’s doctor. you must be willing to donate using either method. “
How To Donate.
There are two ways to donate
Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation (PBSC):
Cells are collected via the bloodstream. To increase the number of stem cells in the bloodstream, donors receive daily injections of a synthetic protein called filgrastim for 4 days before and on the first day of collection. On the day of collection the donor’s blood is removed with a sterile needle from one arm and passed through a machine that separates out the blood stem cells. The remaining blood is returned to the donor through the other arm. PBSC is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that takes about 4-6 hours on 1-2 consecutive days.”
While taking the medication, many donors experience flu-like symptoms such as headaches, bone and muscle achiness and fatigue. Most side effects should subside within 48 hours after donating.
Bone Marrow Donation:
Marrow cells are collected from the backside of the pelvic bone (not the spine) using a special syringe. Donors Receive general aneshesia so no pain is experienced during the marrow extraction. This is a 1-2 hour, outpatient, surgical procedure.
Many donors experience some minor pain, bruising and stiffness for up to two weeks after their donation. Most donors are to return to work, school and regular activities. The donor’s marrow completely regenerates within a few weeks.
